BS LEON RETIREMENT HOME UPGRADE

What Has Been Achieved

 Through donor support, corporate partnerships and hands-on project coordination, Zimhope and BS Leon have delivered substantial improvements across the Home. 

PROGRESS

Targets reached

 

  • Strengthened board governance & financial management with 3 annual audits completed
  • Upgrade from welfare organisation to registered Private Voluntary Organisation #229/26
  • Installation of a 24 kVA solar system and associated electrical improvements. 
  • Installation of approximately 600,000 litres of water storage, upgraded reticulation, a refurbished borehole & a new borehole. 
  • Conversion to gas geysers and renovation of the kitchen, including gas cooking facilities. 
  • Renovation of the dining room, main lounge, TV lounge, 23 Leon House rooms, 3 frailcare wards and 4 cottages. 
  • Conversion of an unused wing into four 60 m² en-suite residential units with kitchenettes and a communal lounge. 
  • Construction of a new one-bedroom cottage and installation of an accessible wet room. 
  • Repairs to sewer lines and other essential infrastructure.

 Three recently renovated wards will become BS Leon’s new frailcare section. The existing frailcare building will then be converted into ten private en-suite rooms with a communal lounge and kitchen. The flexible accommodation will support unassisted and assisted living, frailcare, palliative care, post-surgery recovery and respite care—improving the range of services available while generating additional income to strengthen the Home’s long-term sustainability.

 The refurbished frailcare wing will require hospital beds, bedside furniture, linen, meal trolleys, autoclaves, drug trolleys and other essential care equipment to ensure that staff can provide safe and appropriate support.

Access Road Rehabilitation

 The main access and internal roads require substantial rehabilitation to improve safety and reliable access for residents, visitors, staff, suppliers and emergency services. The estimated cost of the required roadworks for Monavale Road is approximately USD 95,000.
